I love the braiding around this frame.

I see the frame and the wall pockets have the same fringe I learned in my last class.

Sweet little lacey border on this one.

With all the dreaded heat and humidity we've been having, I thought a fan motif might cool us down.....

I've been told that is a strong possibility that this isn't a Tuscarora piece.  It is more likely Mohawk, due to the larger sized beads and the abundance of fringe.  Grant Jonathan (the owner of all the pieces featured on Tuscarora Tuesday) has quite a few Mohawk pieces in his collection - perhaps a Mohawk Monday would be appropriate for those!

As today is my last day being 45,  I thought it was appropriate to post a piece that is as old as me.

Love how the birds on this pillow form part of the border. 

And how the artist left the center of the flowers open and made the loops come out directly from the velvet is so clever. 

Not looking forward to seeing what is on my desk today at work. I haven't been there since last Wednesday, so I can only imagine what I'm going to be walking in to.  Sigh, the price you pay for being on vacation......doesn't seem quite right.    I will try to remember that 'attitude is everything' and I will stay positive and not let the situation overwhelm me.  Well, at least that's the plan.

These boots were made for walkin'

and that's just what they'll do,

I was a young girl when that song came out.  I think it was sung by Nancy Sinatra, is that right? I remember loving it.  The beat was funky and although I was too young to really "get" what the lyrics were about, I do recall thinking that was one girl no one was going to mess with.  And I have a vague memory of seeing her on TV wearing a minidress (red?) with these kick-ass high heeled white boots.  Fun Fun Fun.  Nothing like a pair of go-go boots!  Oh anywhooooo, let's get back to the beads, shall we?

These here have an extra cuff along the top that is separate from the base.  They were meant to be used as a portable sewing caddy.  You slid your scissors behind the cuff so the tips stuck out through the bottom and the back stuffed area held your pins.  How many people do you think actually used them for that purpose?  I'm thinking not many.

I like the colored centers used in this piece above.

And this tulip motif below is very sweet!

Here's a Tuscarora style sewing caddy that I made back in 2005 - geez, 5 years ago??! 

I would have never thought it was that long ago. 

This piece is pretty big.  About 12" tall and 6 1/2" wide. 

And no, I've never used it as a sewing caddy!

It was designed by Rosemary Hill and it was the neatest class.  She held the class in her house, so we were all invited to look around and see all her fabulous beadwork.  She even had squares of beadwork placed in the corners of her doorframes throughout the house - it was amazing, to say the least!

This is my favorite one of the group

and probably the oldest too.

I find it interesting that this 'modern' piece from 1948 is much more plain.

Twins!  Almost.

I like the way the artist used color beads for the tip of the large leaf, but the rest of the piece--well, kind of sad looking.   I guess a reflection of the nation's mood back in 1936. 

Have a terrific Tuesday Everyone!   Here they are predicting 92 degrees and high humidity.  I'm thankful I'll be at work most of the day - in air conditioning, probably freezing.  But if it gets too cold, I'll just step outside and remind myself it could always be worse.

Pretty as a Picture

Today's is Meghan's 17th birthday.  Sigh.

I thought this piece would be appropriate to pick for today simply because of that adorable little one in the hands of her(his?) proud mom. 

I'm thinking there is some artistic license going on with this creature. 

 

Looks like a squirrel?  But with a beak?  Hmmm.

But really, isn't this babe the cutest little thing? 

I can almost hear her (him) giggling. 

Nothing beats the sound of baby laughter.

(I love that  they are posing in front of a painted background of the Falls!)

This beauty is in pretty sad shape, but still amazing.

I noticed the same 3 line edging that is on my class project is used here. 

It's a similar design, with all the filling in between the motifs. 

I really like that basketweave/lattice stitch. 

There seems to be a leaf and stem by each of the  flowers. 

And the bird nest flower appears to use 2 shades of white beads. 

 The outline looks more opaque to me.

I was surprised to see the raised rope actually has a paper outline. 

That couldn't have been too easy to cut out!

Featuring.... Birds!

Brown and blue is one of my favorite colors combinations.

Didn't get all my homework done for my class, being in the woods all weekend really kind of took up a lot of my time. Go figure, right? But I did get two full rounds of the straight line border completed and 3 of the bird nest motifs. Boy, those aren't easy. Mine are definitely newbies! I'll get some pics up hopefully tomorrow. I'll take some step-by-step shots of the bird nest so you can see the idea behind creating them. Of course, mastering the technique is something I've yet to accomplish, so be kind, ok?

Tuscarora Tuesday on a Wednesday :)

Hi There! OK, so I'm a day late (and a dollar short--story of my life, right?). It's not that I didn't want to post, it was just that the day did not have enough hours in it (again, story of my life, and I'm sure 90% of the world population).

But look at this latest class I'm taking!! In all the classes I've done (hmm, someday I should add them up), I have never done such a traditional Tuscarora piece.

So classic with the clear beads and those cylinder tube accent beads and look - I'm even going to learn the traditional "birds nest" motif!
The triple line edge around the entire pillow is also very characteristic of the designs of the Tuscarora.

BUT -no matter how well I can duplicate their designs, I will never call what I create Tuscarora Beadwork. I can't; I'm not of the Tuscarora Nation. To do so would dishonor their culture.

So after 2 hours of instruction (minus about 20 minutes when I had to leave to go fetch up Hannah from the public library and drop her at home - did I ever mention how much I love living in a small city?), this is what I accomplished:

Well, actually I have a wee bit more done- the outline of the circles which will eventually be the bird nests is done too, but I didn't have the chance to take a picture - I was out of time and had a golf date with my friend Elrene!

I'll be taking another bead class from Rosemary Hill in June. Although I don't know exactly what the finished project will look like, it is entitled "Six Point Star."

There are three 6-pointed stars in this collection. Maybe it will be similar to these:
Each of them have an almost identical design - but don't they look quite different? This artist placed the center tube beads horizontally in her petals and has a center vein on her leaves. I like how the center matches the bias tape edge.

This artist used a few rows of tube beads for her petals and no vein in the leaves. What a fanciful center of dots for the flower center.

The artist below used the tube beads in a vertical fashion and also didn't use veins. I noticed they all used a double border of beads around the perimeter, though.

This one seems fairly modern, although there is some wear on the velvet and those large tube beads appear again. Maybe the owner just kept very very very good care of it. As they should!

A Lovely Little Trio of .......

I'm not sure, but they are lovely all the same......

I especially like the way the artist designed the motif so when the purse is closed, the design is continued.

With the velvet worn, you can see the underlying paper used as the interfacing.

The very first beadwork class I took was a whimsy pillow and I remember being shocked that the velvet was glued to a regular old grocery bag. But it worked!

If you look very closely at the motif edges, you can see the paper pattern underneath the beads.
And speaking of trios.....here I am with my sister and mom on Mother's Day! lol

P.S. The book that is tucked under my arm I read in one day - never have I done that before! It's called Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman. The cutest story ever! Oh, and my mom and I are holding the socks she was knitting - they are done now and she has started her second pair all by herself! And she called me crazy for knitting socks......ha, now she's addicted!
